SAMOHI — There are only three games left on the schedule for the Santa Monica High School girls’ volleyball team, and all three are crucial Ocean League games.
The remaining schedule should pose no challenge to the league-leading Vikings. In the most recent California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section rankings, which came out on Oct. 26, Santa Monica was placed at No. 9 in Division 3-AA. No other Ocean League team has made the rankings all year.
Samohi Head Coach Liane Sato, a former Vikings player who helped lead the 1981 team to a state title, is hoping to give the squad an opportunity to contend for their own state title this year. At the start of the season, she admitted the team lacked experience. But, despite the team’s obvious youth, she could foresee a great year ahead for the Vikings.
“Our fans can look forward to a very competitive team this year,” Sato said. “We are looking to do well in our league and peak for the playoffs.”
After having played well in several tournaments both before and during the season, the girls feel they are thoroughly prepared to end the year at the top of the league standings, Sato added.
“We are improving every day,” Sato said. “The team always works together to get the job done. We should do pretty well against Morningside.”
Santa Monica’s next game is today at home against Morningside, starting at 3:15 p.m. The Vikings will then play their last two regular season games next week. First, against Beverly Hills at home on Nov. 2 then they travel to Hawthorne on Thursday, Nov. 4. Both games are also scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m.
