LANCASTER — It was another successful season for the girls’ volleyball team from Santa Monica High School, which ended its season on Thursday night after losing to Lancaster in the second round of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section Division 3-AA playoffs.
Santa Monica Head Coach Liane Sato led her team to a first round sweep over San Gorgonio High School in Div. 3-AA’s 33-team bracket on Tuesday before losing on Thursday night to Lancaster (25-3), the No. 2 seed from the Golden League. Lancaster dropped the first game of the match before taking three straight to beat Samohi in four games, with scores of 25-22, 17-25, 20-25, and 21-25. Lancaster will next play Mayfield High School, from Pasadena, tonight.
Coach Sato said before the season began that her goals for this year included winning the Ocean League and qualifying for the CIF-SS playoffs — which her girls were able to do.
After finishing Ocean League play with a perfect 8-0 record and winning the league, the Vikings also ended the year ranked No. 6 in CIF-SS Div. 3-AA’s season ending polls, the only team from the league to do so.
Coach Sato was pleased with her girls this season, and will look to improve on all the success the Vikings had this year.
“We have some young players that have shown considerable improvement and are hungry to get on the court next season,” Sato said.
