A man died Sunday morning after jumping from a parking structure in downtown Santa Monica, police said.
A white man in his late 40s to early 50s jumped from Parking Structure 2 at 1235 2nd St. at about 10 a.m. Sunday, according to the Santa Monica Police Department. Captain Candice Cobarrubias said he had no identification on his person.
Cobarrubias said officers responded to reports of a suicide at the parking structure and found the man had jumped off the structure into the 2nd Court alley.
The county coroner identified the man Wednesday as Karim Hassibe, 53, of Los Angeles. Public records show Hassibe previously lived in Salt Lake City, Utah.
The death marks the sixth suicide or suicide attempt in downtown parking structures, which are owned by the city of Santa Monica, since September 2018.
Four individuals died between September 2018 and August 2019, and in September 2019, SMPD officers talked down an individual who planned to jump from the roof of Parking Structure 3.
Three individuals have taken their own lives at the Santa Monica Pier over the past two years, and a man killed himself last month by stepping in front of a Metro E (Expo) Line train downtown.
