The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District will meet for the third time online via Zoom this Thursday at 5 p.m. as a result of the ongoing safer-at-home orders, which have been implemented across the state.
It’s been more than a month since the district’s board of education last met, and there are a number of important items that are set to be discussed, according to the posted agenda.
Though it’s listed in the Major Action Items portion of the agenda, a public hearing on a 2020-21 Measure R Parcel Tax is set to kick off Thursday’s meeting.
“It is recommended that the Board of Education hold a public hearing on the matter of the Special Parcel Tax (Measure R) regarding applying a Consumer Price Index (CPI-U) adjustment,” the agenda states before detailing how the public hearing is a standard process that is required prior to levying of the special tax each fiscal year.
“Subsequent to the public hearing, the board of education will formally consider the adoption of a $435.06 per parcel assessment for 2020-21 (3.4% increase from the current $420.75 per parcel rate based on the change in the CPI-U between February 2019 and February 2020),” the agenda states.
Communications items, the consent calendar and a ten minute Earth Day Climate Presentation are expected to follow the hearing.
Resolutions and Action Items
Shortly after the adoption of Resolution No. 19-40, which pertains to the previously discussed Measure R Parcel Tax, the board is expected to approve a number of other resolutions, including one that recognizes May 13, 2020, as California Day of the Teacher and another that acknowledges May as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month.
An attached resolution was not yet listed under the final Major Action Item of the night, which calls for a revised grading policy throughout the district. The item was previously titled, “Adopt BP and AR 6157 – Distance Learning,” according to the agenda. Once posted, the resolution will outline the grading policy that will be implemented by the district for the Spring 2020 term.
Prior to the close of the meeting, the board is expected to announce the rescission of 13 preliminary layoff notices.
Members of the public who wish to make a public comment at the upcoming meeting can do so by completing a Google survey “sign up,” according to the agenda. The survey can be found online at shorturl.at/buC36 and will be open to members of the public 30 minutes prior to the public meeting.
