SAMOHI — This season, several Santa Monica High School girls’ tennis players have qualified for the individual sectional championships in both the singles and the doubles categories of the California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section individual tournament.
The Samohi Vikings will send Ocean League singles’ champion Christine Maddox along with the league’s doubles’ champions: Kayla Shapiro and Rebecca Sherouse.
Shapiro also won the doubles last year, but with a different partner. And Maddox is the first league singles’ champion from Samohi in years, team officials said.
The tournament begins today, with qualifying sectional rounds for participants from Santa Monica’s Division 2 to be held at Cate and Carpinteria High Schools in Carpinteria.
After qualifying rounds are played today, the individual tennis championships will continue at the Seal Beach Tennis Center with elimination rounds next week. The second round will be played next Thursday, Dec. 2 beginning at 11 a.m., with quarterfinals set to be played later that day.
The CIF-SS individual tennis matches will conclude the next day — with semifinals matches and the final championship match-up set for Friday, Dec. 3, beginning at 11 a.m.
In the CIF-SS team championships, Santa Monica qualified for the Division 2 playoffs where the Vikings were able to advance past the first round beating South Hills High School from West Covina. Their season ended however when the girls lost last Saturday, Nov. 13 in the second round of the sectional playoffs to El Dorado.
The girls from Santa Monica finished second against Beverly Hills High School in the Ocean League after regular season play ended last week, although both teams entered the post-season with identical 7-1 league records. The Vikings were also ranked No. 10 on the CIF-SS Div. 2 season-ending polls, their second consecutive season ending the year ranked.
