A preseason schedule stacked with tough opponents and tougher tournaments should have prepared Samohi to continue its dominance of the Ocean League, Head Coach Debbie Skaggs said.
Carefully measuring her words to keep from giving bulletin board material to league rivals, Skaggs is hopeful that this year’s edition of Vikings softball has the potential to continue its run of league supremacy. The Vikings have not lost to a league opponent since at least the 2003-04 season. Skaggs said she couldn’t recall the last loss.
The Vikings are 9-5 overall as they head into the league opener against Inglewood (8-6) today at Samohi. The game begins at 3:15 p.m. Skaggs expects Natalie Abel to take the mound while the team’s No. 1 starter Celisha Walker nurses a sore hamstring.
This season has added importance because this will be Skaggs’ last run as the head coach. She has served in that capacity for the past 24 seasons. Also, this will be the last season for the team’s softball field, which will be razed as part of a major campus redevelopment.
