SAMOHI — The California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section individual tennis championships began last week at Cate High School in Carpenteria, with qualifying rounds starting on Friday, Nov. 19.
There were three girls from Santa Monica High School’s varsity tennis team in attendance. Christine Maddox, the regular season Ocean League champion, represented the Vikings in the singles section of the tournament, while Kayla Shapiro and Rebecca Sherouse paired up as the lone doubles group to make the tournament for Samohi. They were also League champions. Kayla also won the regular season doubles title for the Vikings last year, but with a different partner.
Team officials said Maddox was the first league singles champion from Samohi in years, and the Vikings had high hopes for the freshman. But, after winning her first two matches, she was eventually knocked out of the tournament in her third match. She lost with scores of 6-0 and 6-2 to Dos Pueblos High Schools’ Lauren Stratman.
In the doubles, Shapiro and Sherouse won their first match but then lost their second in a third set tie -breaker. None of the girls from Santa Monica advanced to the next round.
The tournament will continue with the round of 16 matches to be held on Thursday, Dec. 2. The semifinal and championship matches are set for Dec. 3, beginning at 11 a.m.
