For the Santa Monica Lions, the year ends on June 30th, so we spend the spring finishing up old projects and getting ready to start new ones in the fall.
Some of the projects we are finishing up included:
- A beach clean-up at the Dockweiler State Beach in Playa del Rey, where 20 Lions were joined by 12 Leos to clean the beach for two hours followed by a tailgate picnic.
- A baking day at the West Los Angeles Fisher House, where Lions from Santa Monica and Beverly Hills baked four cakes, cinnamon rolls and three types of bar cookies to be served at their Mother’s Day Celebration the next day.
- New Young Leaders in Service Awards were given to 33 students from Lincoln Middle School, 11 from John Adams Middle School and three from New Roads High School, for each of them completing 100+ hours of community service.
- Joining other Lions from our district in assembling toiletry bags for the homeless, in partnership with the Ventura area Lions, later this month.
As part of preparing for next year we have elected our new officers and board members: Co-Presidents – Pam Andrews, Kingsley Fife and Larry Levee; VP - Linda Levee; Secretary - Carole Mullaney; Co-Treasurers - Pam Andrews and Alan Parr; Lion Tamer - Linda Levee; and Tail Twister - Gail Litvack. The board members are Susan DeRemer, Kingsley Fife, Arnie Levee, Becky Mejia and Manuela Selles.
We are also gearing-up for our 65th Annual Pancake Breakfast, on Saturday, September 28th at the SM Boys & Girls Club. With a great all-you-can-eat buffet that starts at 8 AM, you can also enjoy entertainment, kids activities and a raffle. Money raised from this event goes back to the community through grants we award each year. With this in mind, we will be highlighting each of the organizations that received a grant from us this past year, letting ticket buyers and donors learn how their participation helps others. The Santa Monica Lions Club represents a proud tradition of more than 95 years of community service. In an effort to diversify our club and meet the changes in our community, we now offer evening meetings once a quarter to meet the needs of today’s business professional and/or busy parent, whom are unable to attend our twice-monthly lunch meetings, but would like to use their skills and talents to work on specific projects and give back to those in need.
