I have been a proud resident of the Ocean Park area for the last 24 years. I am near the 4th Street bridge and Ocean Park Blvd is my usual driving route being on it several times a day. For nearly a quarter of a century, I have been dismayed by how awful the Muir Woods mural looks at the intersection of Lincoln Blvd. Unlike the Daniel Alonzo’s Whale of a Mural that runs under the 4th Street bridge which is constantly being touched up and cared for, the Muir Woods Mural has been totally abandoned and is truly an eye sore.
I was very thankful today to read in today’s SMDP, that The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District is meeting tomorrow and that the consensus is they will proceed with encapsulating the lead paint with paint matching the rest of the Michelle & Barack Obama Center for Inquiry & Exploration. I have watched these buildings being renovated with careful restoration. Completing the painting to be uniform will finally make this building “shine”.
Although the article mentions that the Board will possibly be open to a collaborative process which might lead to a new mural, why not make that mural one that is about Science or Exploration? As for painting another Muir Woods mural there, why not do a new mural where it would be more appropriate. Namely the John Muir Elementary School?
