The signs are clear that a Vegas-style development is in Santa Monica's future should the City Council approve the Fairmont Miramar's expansion plan. Despite the Miramar developer's claims that they will not bring a Hollywood-style night club to Santa Monica, they have done just that by opening a club designed by a man described as the "king of L.A. nightlife ("L.A.'s king of nightlife mellows out with new SM hangout," Aug. 9)"
This new club, which the article said allows "those on the Westside to get a taste of Hollywood without all the hassle," is exactly what we have been afraid of! Santa Monica is not Hollywood, and we prefer that it stay that way. The opening of the Miramar's new club shows that any promises they make about their expansion plans being appropriate for the Santa Monica community cannot be trusted. We urge the City Council to take note of the developer's broken promises, and to preserve the special quality of our community.
