CITY HALL — A new truck is joining the Santa Monica fleet, a zero-emissions truck that will serve the Water Division.
The first of its kind purchased in the United States, the ZeroTruck is the only all-electric truck on sale in the U.S. this year.
All Santa Monica fleet vehicles are currently run on compressed natural gas, but the city continues to look for new sustainable vehicles, said Gil Borboa, water resources manager.
“It’s keeping with our sustainability goals and our attempt to reduce emissions from all our fleet vehicles,” he said.
The medium duty truck will be equipped with a Scelzi utility body, fully automated transmission, advanced lithium batteries, onboard battery charger and regenerative braking. It can run on electric power at a highway speed of 55 mph and will be used within the Water Division’s meter shop operations, the unit that performs meter reading, repairs and change outs, Borboa said.
Electrorides Inc., the company that produces the truck, is based out of Southern California and is handling its delivery to Santa Monica through South Bay Truck Center in Carson. The base price for the vehicle is $130,000 but the price at which Santa Monica purchased it is unknown.
