On Sunday, Sept. 15, a bicyclist was rear ended by a driver on the 3200 block of Wilshire Blvd. near the intersection of Wilshire and Franklin St. The impact caused the bicyclist to hit his head on the frame of the vehicle causing “severe head trauma” according to SMPD.
“The driver of the vehicle has been cooperative with the investigation and we have not received a follow up from the hospital on the bicyclist,” said SMPD Lt. Candice Cobarrubias. “The primary collision factor has not been determined.”
She said the investigation is ongoing and will be dependent on the ability of officials to interview the bicyclist.
The accident was the second serious crash involving a bicyclist over the weekend.
On Thursday, officers were called to the area of 20th and Santa Monica for a traffic collision at about 4 p.m. Initial reports said a bicyclist and car had collided head on, however, Cobarrubias said the bicyclist made a left turn in front of the car and hit.
The bicyclist received serious injuries and is still listed in critical condition.
The accidents capped an intense week for the Santa Monica Police Department. Officers are still searching for a suspect that stole up to five thousand dollars from a Montana Ave. bank early in the week and officers shot a man on Thursday night who had broken into a home.
