After a week of community discussions regarding the district’s budget and a community mural, Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s board of education is set to gather for its first meeting of the month this Thursday.
The board will meet in Malibu for the first time since November and this month’s meeting will not feature any commendations or recognitions, according to the agenda. There are also no items under the study session portion. However, the board is expected to adopt two resolutions later in the meeting.
The first resolution, which is officially titled Resolution No. 19-19, the agenda states, seeks to honor the achievements and contributions of African-American citizens in the United States.
“In 1976, as part of the nation’s bicentennial, Black History Week was expanded and February was established as Black History Month,” the resolution states as it explains how African-Americans have contributed to the development of the nation.
“Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education does hereby adopt this resolution to encourage: the celebration of Black History Month; the instruction to our students on the achievements and contributions of Black citizens; fostering in our students a greater understanding of the roles African Americans have played throughout the history of our nation; and helping all students understand their responsibilities in protecting and preserving the humanity of all people,” the resolution states.
It’s also been recommended that the Board of Education adopt Resolution No. 19-20 – In Honor of Career Technical Education Month, the agenda states, before mentioning the U.S. Senate unanimously passed a resolution in 2016 recognizing February as CTE Month.
Following the Senate’s adoption of the resolution, the agenda states, “the Association for Career Technical Education stated: ‘CTE Month is an opportunity for millions of students and education professionals to share the accomplishments and importance of CTE nationwide. [The] Senate’s support for CTE Month and its goals advance[s] our community’s effort to build awareness of CTE’s role in preparing all students for the 21st century economy.’”
Now, therefore be it resolved, the resolution states, that the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education adopts this resolution to: recognize February as Career and Technical Education Month across the United States; support the goals and ideals of Career and Technical Education month; recognize the importance of career and technical education in preparing a well-educated and skilled workforce; and encourage educators, counselors and administrators to promote career and technical education as an option for students.
Financial reports
The board will then move to discuss multiple mid-year reports, according to the agenda. The first report expected to be received by the board will come from the Financial Oversight Committee, but reports pertaining to early child care, health and safety, and the district’s visual and performing arts have also been submitted and will be discussed.
