The night before Thanksgiving took a violent turn this year when a local man shot at a cab driver before turning the gun on himself.
The Santa Monica Police Department received a call of gunshots on the 800 block of Bay Street late Wednesday night. When officers arrived on scene, they spoke to a cab driver who said said he had been shot at over a disputed fare.
According to the cab driver, he drove a man to his home but upon arrival the passenger had disputed the cost of the ride. The suspect then exited the cab, entered the home and then reemerged carrying a gun. The suspect fired several shots in the direction of the driver who fled the scene before calling the police.
Upon further investigation, officers spoke to a woman who said her husband had shot himself inside their apartment. Police determined the man was the same suspect who had shot at the cab.
According to SMPD, the suspect survived his self-inflicted wound and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
