PUBLIC SAFETY FACILITY — A man who was shadow boxing on the 3100 block of Santa Monica Boulevard in the early morning hours Thursday was severely beaten by two men and is now in critical condition at a local trauma center, police said.
Detectives are asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspects, described as two white males, said Santa Monica police Sgt. Richard Lewis.
“The attack occurred near Busby’s [West] bar around when it closed so we’re hoping that there were people out there who saw something,” Lewis said.
The victim was clad in workout gear and had on sparring gloves and wrist weights, police said. He was apparently shadow boxing around 2:20 a.m. when the suspects approached him and hit him seven to 10 times, causing severe neck and head injuries.
The suspects fled the location, heading westbound. A homeless man who was in the area saw the attack and notified police.
“He was about a block away and said it was a straight attack,” Lewis said.
A motive for the assault is unknown.
Anyone with information on the attack is urged to contact the SMPD at (310) 458-8491.
