CITYWIDE — The Los Angeles County League of Conservation Voters has released its list of endorsements for Santa Monica’s City Council election, backing four sitting council members and challenger Ted Winterer in November’s race.
The group, which is the only environmental political action committee in L.A. County, has thrown its support behind incumbents Kevin McKeown and Pam O’Connor, in addition to Winterer, in the race for three four-year terms. Councilmembers Terry O’Day and Gleam Davis won the group’s support in the race for two two-year terms.
“It was a pretty rigorous process, so I’m pleased to have come out on the positive end of it,” Davis said.
Also this week, the board of trustees of the Santa Monica Community College District unanimously endorsed Measure Y, the ballot initiative that would increase the local sales tax a half percent to 10.25 percent. The board also announced its support for an advisory measure that will appear on the ballot urging the City Council to pledge $6 million of the estimated $12 million the tax increase would raise annually for educational programs.
In a resolution expressing its support for the measure, the board hinted it may see an opportunity to receive a piece of the pie should it win voter approval.
“Without Measure Y, vital services, such as 911 services, paramedics and police, school and community college funding face serious cuts,” the resolution stated.
