The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a pair of warnings covering heat and waves for the Santa Monica area.
An excessive heat warning covers much of Los Angeles County Coast including Downtown Los Angeles, Malibu, Santa Monica, Beverly Hills, Hollywood, and Long Beach through 8 p.m. Tuesday.
Temperatures are expected to range from 86-96 across inland sections of the coastal plain today, then 90-100 Tuesday. Overnight minimum temperatures are expected in the upper 60s to mid-70s.
Officials said there is increased potential for serious heat-related illnesses, especially for the young and elderly, those performing outdoor activities, as well as those without access to air conditioning. There is also an increased potential for power outages.
NWS said residents should take basic heat precautions including limiting time outside, reducing strenuous activity, wearing light clothing and drinking plenty of water. Pets and people should never be left in enclosed vehicles and activity could be rescheduled for the early or later parts of the day.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat strokes are an emergency and victims should call 911.
The service has also issued a Beach Hazards Statement for the area. Beach-goers are being warned of the potential for high surf across south facing beaches and very high tides later this week.
“There is a potential for high surf, strong RIP currents and high tides over 7 feet later this week,” said the alert. “South to southwest facing beaches will see the highest surf. The combination of high surf and high tides would bring local beach erosion and minor flooding of beach parking lots.”
