On the first day of election season, 20 Santa Monicans pulled papers from the City Clerk’s office to run for office.
The Nomination Period for three seats on the City Council, three seats on the Rent Control Board, four seats on the Santa Monica-Malibu School District Board and four seats on the Santa Monica College District Board opened on Monday, July 18.
Potential candidates must pickup paperwork from the City Clerk’s Office by attending a scheduled workshop or making an appointment within the nomination window. Those forms must be returned by Friday, August 12 unless an incumbent in a race fails to file and in that case, the deadline for that race will be extended through August 17.
To run for office, potential candidates must gather no less than 100 valid signatures from registered voters in the jurisdiction of the office they are running in to qualify for the ballot. A filing fee must be paid at the time petitions and forms are filed,
If candidates plan to raise more than $2,000 or spend more than $1,000 during their campaign, thy must establish a Campaign Committee by filing with the Secretary of State and setting up an electronic filing account with the City Clerk’s Office.

The process is the same for candidates in neighboring jurisdictions. Candidates in Malibu should pickup their forms from City Clerk’s Office at Malibu City Hall (located at 23825 Stuart Ranch Road, Malibu CA, 90265) throughout the nomination period during the City Clerk’s office hours, which are posted at: https://www.malibucity.org/DocumentCenter/View/30248/Notice-of-Office-Hours. Candidates in Los Angeles must file with the Los Angeles County Registrar-Recorder/County Clerk (RR/CC) at their Norwalk Headquarters. Candidates wanting to file paperwork in person must make an appointment prior to visiting the RR/CC Norwalk HQ. Appointments can be made online, or by calling 1-800-815-2666, option 4. Alternatively, candidates may request their paperwork be issued to them by email or U.S. mail if requested in advance of the deadline.
