On Friday January 25th, 2019 at 10:15 a.m. the Santa Monica Fire Department received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting a fire in a 20-unit, 3 story apartment building at 533 Ashland Avenue in the Ocean Park community of Santa Monica. Firefighters arrived in 5 minutes and 41 seconds and encountered an entire apartment unit on the second floor completely engulfed in flames.
31 Firefighters fought back the flames and successfully kept the fire from spreading to adjacent apartment units. The fire was fully extinguished in 17 minutes, with no reported injuries to residents or first responders. Unfortunately, one family was displaced due to the severity of the damage. Assistance was provided by the Santa Monica Police Department and the City’s Building and Safety department. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation by SMFD Fire Investigators.
