For March only, CRJ meeting will take place in the Teen Center which is located at the south west corner of Virginia Avenue Park behind the Park Center Building at 21st Street and Pico. Walk between the Park Center Building and the Annex to access the teen center.
The March 1 Committee For Racial Justice gathering will be in the Teen Center at Virginia Ave. Park due to the Thelma Terry Center being used as a Voting Center.
In this Election season, any number of our voting decisions will help determine whether our society moves farther from or closer to racial equity. This is especially true with respect to Los Angeles County Measure R. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s department is notorious for contributing to the over-incarceration of people of color in Los Angeles County and for mistreating people of color while they are behind bars. The department clearly needs oversight, and Measure R is the Los Angeles County Sheriff Civilians Oversight Commission Ordinance.
The guest speaker will be Jasmyne Cannick, who is an African-American on-air and in-print pop culture critic and race issues commentator who works in politics. She was selected as one of ESSENCE Magazine’s 25 Women Shaping the World, KCET’s Southern California Seven Women of Vision, one of the Most Influential African-Americans in Los Angeles Under 40, one of Los Angeles’ Most Fascinating Angelenos by the L.A. Weekly, and one of 40 People Under 40 by the Advocate.
Cannick will inform us about the conditions to which Measure R is a response and explain what the measure will do if adopted. She will also take part in a discussion on other issues in this primary election that are related to concerns about mass incarceration.
This event is sponsored by the Committee for Racial Justice. Co-sponsored by Virginia Ave Park; the African American Parent, Student, Staff Support Group; and Church in Ocean Park. For more information, call Joanne at 310-422-5431.
