City Hall will be hosting the 74th annual Memorial Day observance at Woodlawn Cemetery on Monday, featuring patriotic songs, speeches about Santa Monica’s past and a DC-3 flyover.
The flyover will occur at approximately 11:30 a.m. The plane will fly over the cemetery at 1,000 feet, making two passes.
The DC-3 was built by the Douglas Aircraft Co. and made its maiden flight on Dec. 17, 1935 at Santa Monica Airport, city officials said.
The Douglas DC-3 virtually changed the commercial aviation industry and was used extensively by the United States military during World War II. Over 10,000 were built, many of them in Santa Monica, according to City Hall.
The event is free and open to the public. Event parking is available at the Santa Monica College structure at 16th Street and Pico Boulevard and at a lot at the corner of Pico Boulevard and 14th Street.
The Big Blue Bus will be providing shuttles to and from Woodlawn Cemetery from 9:30 a.m. until 1 p.m. No charge for parking or the shuttle. No parking will be allowed on the cemetery grounds.
The program will also feature City Councilmember Bob Holbrook, who will share stories of Santa Monica’s past; police officer Shaun Dove, who will perform patriotic songs; Santa Monica High School student Eli Brown, who will play taps; and entertainment from the Santa Monica Oceanaires.
Woodlawn, which is owned and operated by City Hall, is located at 1847 14th St.
