On Feb. 5 at approximately 4:14 p.m.
Officers responded to the Santa Monica Place (395 Santa Monica Place) regarding a “Brandishing of a weapon” call. The comments of the call indicated that a male just pulled a box cutter knife out on mall security.
Officers arrived and located the subject nearby. When the officers attempted to detain the subject for their investigation, he refused to stop and continued to walk away from the officers. The man was subsequently detained by officers and they continued to investigate the incident.
The officers investigated the incident and found that the man, later identified as James Rude, made verbal threats towards a security guard and then brandished a box cutter to the security guard. This incident was witnessed by several bystanders who positively identified Rude as the suspect. James Chanhing Rude, 23, from Hemet was arrested for brandishing, criminal threats and resisting arrest. Bail was set at $50,000.
