Santa Monica police and fire fighters rescued a 29-year-old man who was threatening to kill himself by jumping off the end of the Santa Monica Pier on Wednesday night.
Police responded to the pier at 8:55 p.m. after receiving a report that the man was suicidal, SMPD Sgt. Richard Lewis said.
A family member called police after the man said he was going to overdose and jump off the pier.
The man climbed down to a cement beam under the west end of the pier, Lewis said, where he remained until he passed out or fell asleep. Authorities were able to bring him back up onto the pier without incident.
The man, whose identity was not released by police, was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The incident lasted roughly an hour, Lewis said.
