The Santa Monica Community College District Personnel Commission has recently appointed Lawrence Leone to fill the seat, vacated by the recent retirement of Dolores Press.
Leone will be serving a three-year term through Dec. 1, 2016, college officials said. Press had served since 1998.
The Personnel Commission selected Leone from among six applicants to fill the seat.
The five-member commission is the public body responsible for the administration of the college's Merit System, a civil service system for classified employees and for fostering the advancement of a career service for such employees. To execute these responsibilities, the State Education Code provides that the commissioners shall classify positions; hear appeals of disciplinary and dismissal matters, and protests involving examinations, selection and appointment procedures; and prescribe rules related to a variety of personnel practices.
Leone has been a practicing attorney in family law since 1977, and a resident of Santa Monica since 1973. He has served as a board member and trustee with the Los Angeles County Bar Association, a member of the Los Angeles County Bar Foundation Board and is a former chair of the Family Law Section.
He has served as a judge pro tem on over 100 occasions and is chief counsel for Island Outpost, an educational nonprofit organization.
He is a graduate of Loyola Marymount University Law School and the UCLA, with high honors.
