Politics is a mystery to most of us. We accept it as something someone else does. Not too many of us get involved. Those that do have trouble telling us what actually goes on in Congress. Some politicians seem to like it that way. It makes it easier for them to pass legislation without problems.
At last we have a book that is a step in the right direction.
Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Santa Monica) tries to explain to us the issues and details the steps that were taken to address the problem. He details for us some of the pressures and some of the issues he has had to grapple with. He is honest about what he faced.
The slant is toward the liberal side and is not balanced. If you keep that in mind you can still have a good read. It is not light reading. But for political science majors and those who enjoy reading about the daily ins and outs of how a bill comes to the floor, this is a good introduction. It is, as they would say, straight from the horse’s mouth.
Waxman details his involvement in each issue he talks about. He seems to enjoy the details.
Also, this is a good book for high school political science courses as side reading. It is not at textbook level. I don’t think Waxman meant it to be.
