The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) wants to inform customers about a new amnesty program designed to assist qualified drivers with paying unpaid traffic or non-traffic infraction tickets, by reducing fines by 50 or 80 percent. The 18-month long Traffic Tickets/Infractions Amnesty Program began October 1.
This new amnesty program is not a DMV program, applicants must contact the superior court in the jurisdiction(s) where they received the traffic ticket(s) to find out if they are eligible to participate. Applicants can find court information and locations on the California Court's Locator System at http://www.courts.ca.gov/find-my-court.htm.
California drivers with outstanding infraction tickets originally due for payment on or before January 1, 2013, and those seeking to have their driver license reinstated may qualify for the program. This amnesty program does not apply to parking tickets, reckless driving, and Driving Under the Influence (DUI) offenses.
Courts, counties, and other authorized collection agencies may charge a $50 amnesty program fee. Also, if reinstating your license, the DMV will charge a $55 reinstatement fee, which the department charges to have any driver license reinstated.
If you think you may qualify for the program, you may obtain a copy of your Driver Record in order to identify information on Failure-to-Pays or Failure-to-Appears, the cost is $2 online, or $5 in person or by mail.
