CVS has filed paperwork to open a new store at the corner of 5th and Wilshire in the former Whole Foods building.
A consultant working on behalf of the corporation filed an application to sell alcohol at the location earlier this year. That application was granted in February.
According to the alcohol determination, the store will occupy the current 15,375 square foot property. No changes to the floor area or square footage are proposed. The former Whole Foods had an alcohol license and under current codes, the new business will be permitted to also sell alcohol provided it complies with the conditions of the prior license.
CVS has agreed to keep the parking lot lights active, prohibit loitering in the parking lot, limit noise in the immediate area, conduct deliveries and trash operations between 8 a.m. and 10 p.m., and limit alcohol sales to between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m.
“The primary use of the premises involves small scale general retail establishment (CVS) with ancillary alcohol sales,” said the application.
The company has also filed paperwork to conduct an interior remodel of the building. Work includes demolition of interior partitions, interior finishing and a new non-passenger type lift. Work on the outside of the building includes repainting, a new trash enclosure, new lights and new mechanical units on the roof.
The permit also describes two new ADA compliant bathrooms, drinking fountain, sinks and a utility sink.
The parking lot will be restriped along with improvements to some of the underground plumbing.
Whole Foods left the building in August of 2017 when the company opened its 365 store on Pico. The property has been vacant since that time but the parking lot has been open for public use.
Plans for the new CVS follow news that Target is also opening in Downton.
The Architectural Review Board will hear a design review for a proposed store at 420 Broadway at their May 20 meeting. The company is considering occupying the former Fred Segal building at the corner of 5th and Broadway with a goal of opening in 2020.
The store will occupy 24,000 square feet of space in a building that retailer Fred Segal vacated in March 2016. Renderings of the location show a one-story building with wood paneling and windows facing the street.
