Santa Monica schools remain open today and officials say no threat has been made against local children.
The Los Angeles Unified School District, the second largest in the nation, closed all campuses today after receiving threat against multiple school sites.
Police officers are searching every LAUSD school site and parents were asked to keep their children home. Children that did arrive at Los Angeles schools are being kept safe until a parent can return to pick them up.
The threat was specific to Los Angeles and did not include neighboring communities like Santa Monica.
SMMUSD Superintendent Sandra Lyon issued a statement to local parents clarifying the Santa Monica situation.
“As many of you have heard LAUSD schools are closed today due to a bomb threat,” said the message. “All of our SMMUSD schools are open today and we have had no threats of any kind. We are in communication with law enforcement and our administrators and all will be on high alert throughout the day. We know how concerning this is and can assure you that we will take all necessary precautionary measures to ensure our students and staff are safe.”
