Santa Monica firefighters in October will be trading in their traditional blue uniforms for pink ones in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The SMFD and Santa Monica Firefighters Local 1109 have joined with the Susan G. Komen Passionately Pink for the Cure to raise money for breast cancer research. This will be the second year fire fighters have decided to join the fundraising efforts.
Those who want to donate can do so by visiting www.passionatelypink.org (Susan G. Komen). Choose "Give to a Team" and type in "Judah Mitchell" (Team Captain) and choose "Donate Now." Mitchell is a training chief with the SMFD.
Breast cancer continues to be a devastating disease. About 230,480 women were expected to be diagnosed with invasive breast cancer and nearly 40,000 women will die from this disease this year, according to the American Cancer Society's most recent estimates for breast cancer in the U.S.
Of all women, one in eight will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Men should be concerned, too. In 2011, 2,100 men were diagnosed with breast cancer. Over 450 of them will die this year from the disease.
