Santa Monica’s Luke Zelon may have just wrapped up the football season a few weeks ago, but the versatile player still has his mind on the gridiron.
He isn’t sizing up an opponent or working on game plans, but his choice of where to play next year is still a work in progress.
The linebacker/fullback/H-back has narrowed down his list to include New Mexico State, San Diego State, Washington State, Iowa State and Harvard. From such a wide selection of suitors, Zelon said that everything from playing in a major conference to a quality education are guiding him through what can be a difficult process to navigate.
“I’m pretty open, I haven’t made any favorites,” Zelon said. “There is something about each school that I really like.”
Obviously, Harvard offers the best education and its coaching staff has already come calling. Zelon met with coaches from the Ivy League heavyweight on Tuesday and has submitted an early application to be considered for admission to the elite school.
Sure, education will play a roll, but so will the size of the stage he will play on.
“That’s important,” he said of playing in a major conference such as the Pac-10 or the Big-12. “It will be an issue, that’s what I’m thinking right now.”
The allure of both a big-time football school and a top-notch education are both interesting to Zelon, but early playing time may decide where he goes.
“I’m not afraid of competition,” Zelon said of fighting for a spot high on the depth chart. “I’m ready to battle.”
