The Santa Monica Pier was closed suddenly this morning as police investigated a bomb threat. Officials sent out a notification at about 10:30 a.m. announcing the closure of the popular tourist destination after receiving a threatening email.
“For your safety, please avoid the Pier area until further notice,” said the alert. “Law enforcement is currently investigating a bomb threat. Your cooperation is crucial in ensuring the safety of everyone in the vicinity.
"Please remain vigilant and adhere to any instructions provided by authorities. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your understanding during this situation. Stay safe and stay clear of the Pier until the all-clear is given. Thank you.”
In addition to evacuating any pedestrians on the Pier, the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) are working to investigate and clear all vehicles nearby.
+ + + UPDATE + + + As of 12:09 p.m. the Daily Press has received word from officials that the Pier has been reopened and SMPD have confirmed by way of a SMAlert.
Every emergency service, including both the SMPD and the Fire Department along with the Coast Guard are thoroughly prepared for threats made that incorporate the iconic Santa Monica Pier, knowing that because it's such an iconic landmark, it will occasionally present itself as a potential target.
Back in October of last year, every emergency service in the area took part in a massive, multi-agency training exercise planned to simulate such a situation, to better prepare for the unlikely event of a disaster-induced rapid pier evacuation.
“In our line of business, we always have to think about the worst case scenario, plan for it and prepare as best we can,” Doug Woodhams, Sergeant with the SMPD’s Directed Action Response Team said.
