Three years after its announcement and two years after it was first scheduled to open, Modelland will welcome visitors for the first time this Friday.
According to the official website, “ModelLand is a multi-sensorial experience to enhance your outer & inner beauty.”
Guests will participate in a “posing party” with posing professionals for up to 90 minutes that will include advice on beauty tips and techniques for taking photos. Visitors will also visit “theatrical shopping experiences” during their time in the facility.
Tickets start at $35 and all tickets include an ice cream tasting. Higher priced options range up to $225 per person and include promotional or limited edition items.
Banks previously opened a dedicated ice cream parlor in the mall under her Smize Cream brand and while that store closed, the ice cream products have been incorporated into ModelLand.
Banks is known for her modeling career and television work. She was the first female model to appear on the cover of GQ magazine and the first black woman to appear on the cover of the Sports Illustrated swimsuit edition. She was also twice named as TIME magazine’s most influential people in the world and has taught at Stanford’s Graduate School of Business.
“After almost a lifetime of dominating the front covers of major magazines, supermodel and super-businesswoman Tyra Banks is turning the camera on you,” said the announcement of the opening. “Santa Monica’s long-awaited ModelLand is opening at Santa Monica Place on Friday, September 2. ModelLand is not a museum; it’s a celebration of beauty in all its forms. Everyone is invited to step into their best light and live out their photo fantasies within a gleaming, luxurious attraction.”
The 21,000 square foot space previously hosted a pop-up museum, Candytopia, for four months in early 2018. Banks announced plans for her business in 2019 with an initial scheduled opening in 2020.
