SAMOHI — The latest California Interscholastic Federation Southern Section girls basketball poll has Santa Monica ranked second in Division 1A.
This is the highest ranking the Vikings have earned this season. Samohi trails only Canyon Springs, a team it defeated earlier this season. Canyon Springs eliminated the Vikings in the semifinals of the playoffs last season.
Samohi’s girls are now 16-6 on the season and 6-0 in Ocean League play. The Vikings played league rival Inglewood last night, but results were not available at presstime.
Samohi is currently in first place in league with Inglewood a close second, just one game back. Samohi defeated Inglewood earlier this season.
Head Coach Marty Verdugo’s plan of taking on elite non-league teams have played out favorably for the Vikings. While not all of the high-profile games have resulted in wins, Samohi has been in nearly every game this season, gaining experience for the postseason. Key non-league games this season included the win against Canyon Springs and another against Troy. A loss against Mater Dei last weekend was the team’s most anticipated game of the season, filling the main gym on campus.
