SAMOHI — The streak lives on.
Santa Monica High School’s softball team’s impressive Ocean League consecutive game shutout streak is alive and well following an 18-0 win over Morningside on Thursday. The Vikings have not given up a run to a league opponent since April 19, 2007 during a 17-1 romp over Morningside. The streak has now spanned parts of three seasons and has reached an impressive 20 straight games.
“Everyone is doing great,” Head Coach Debbie Skaggs said. “It’s still early in the season, but I’m happy with where we’re at.”
Sophomore Natalie Abel earned the victory over Morningside, giving up just two hits in the process.
The rout Thursday was the second lopsided victory of the week for Samohi. The Vikings topped Hawthorne at home on Tuesday, 10-0. Star pitcher Celisha Walker earned the victory against Hawthorne by allowing just one hit.
Walker, who is the team’s top starter, had been hampered by a pulled oblique muscle since last month, but appears to be healthy once again. Prior to Tuesday’s game, the team had been off for two weeks due to spring break. Skaggs said the team are no worse for wear following the long gap in play.
The Vikings next action will come Saturday during a double header as part of the El Segundo Tournament. Samohi will take on Mary Star of the Sea at 11 a.m. and Banning at 1 p.m.
Samohi played Banning last season and eked out a 1-0 victory.
Crossroads baseball runs streak to five<p>
The Roadrunners’ strong play continued Tuesday with a 17-2 win over Delphic League rival Sierra Canyon. With the win, Crossroads has won five games in a row including wins over Brentwood and Hawthorne.
With the win, Crossroads is now 10-2 overall and 1-0 in league.
Crossroads played Sierra Canyon in a rematch on Friday, but results were not available as of presstime.
Next week, the Roadrunners will play a pair against Malibu’s Kilpatrick.
