The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District’s Board of Education will hold two meetings this week as district leaders will gather Tuesday for an informational meeting and Thursday for a regular one.
The special meeting on Tuesday will consist of nothing but the presentation of various 2018-2019 School Plans for Student Achievement by elementary and secondary school principals.
Each of the plans that will be presented have already been reviewed by the English Learner Advisory Committee and approved by the School Site Council of each school, according to the agenda, so each will focus on addressing specific goals that are in alignment with the District’s Local Control and Accountability Plan.
Once presented, the School Plans for Student Achievement are expected to be approved by the board of education on Nov. 21, according to district officials. Interested stakeholders are invited to view SMMUSD’s 2019-20 SPSA Board presentations by visiting bit.ly/SchoolPlanSMMUSD.
Golden Sneaker Award
Thursday’s meeting will begin with recognitions and commendations as the board of education will recognize the school that had the highest participation rate for Bike It! Walk It! Day last month, according to Thursday’s agenda.
Bike It! Walk It! Day is part of the City of Santa Monica’s Safe Routes to School Program, which is described as an initiative designed to make walking and biking to school a customary part of everyday life, the city of Santa Monica’s website states. Last year, McKinley Elementary School had the highest level of participation in the district.
National Inclusive Schools Week
During the meeting’s “Major Action Items” section, the board will likely approve a resolution pertaining to Inclusive Schools Week, which is held each year during the first full week in December, according to the district’s agenda.
“Since its inception in 2001, Inclusive Schools Week has celebrated the progress that schools have made in providing a supportive and quality education to an increasingly diverse student population, including students who are marginalized due to disability, gender, socio-economic status, cultural heritage, language preference and other factors,” the agenda reads, mentioning the week also provides an important opportunity for educators, students and parents to discuss what else can be done to ensure that schools continue to improve their ability to successfully educate all children.
Finances
Following the discussion and expected approval of “routine paper transfers” by the board, the Santa Monica Education Foundation will deliver it’s quarterly report to the board of education.
“The memorandum of understanding between the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District and the Santa Monica Education Foundation stipulates that the Executive Director, or her designee, shall provide an update of the Ed Foundation’s activities, including a report regarding the goals set forth in the applicable Fundraising Plan, to the Board of Education at a public meeting on a quarterly basis,” Thursday’s agenda states.
Staff is expected to report on the foundation’s fundraising progress from July 1 through Nov. 15 and also provide an update on communication plans.
