Crime Watch is a weekly series culled from reports provided by the Santa Monica Police Department. These are arrests only. All parties are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
Friday, May 22, at 2 p.m.,
Santa Monica police officers on patrol in the 1700 block of Michigan Avenue observed a man they believed to be a drug dealer. Officers made contact with the suspect and found a large amount of money in his pockets. Officers took the man back to a home where he was staying and conducted a consensual search of the home. Officers said they found crack cocaine, scales and baggies, leading them to believe the suspect was distributing narcotics. Officers placed the suspect under arrest and transported him to the Santa Monica Jail for booking. At the jail, officers were able to determine that the suspect had stuffed drugs up his rectum in an attempt to hide them from police. Officers obtained a search warrant and drugs were recovered from his rectum by qualified medical personnel at a local hospital. The suspect, who was identified as Henry Dino, 46, a transient, was booked for possession of narcotics for sale, bringing a controlled substance into the jail, possession of narcotics paraphernalia, obstruction of arrest, and a parole violation. He was not eligible for bail.
Monday, May 25, at 4:16 p.m.,
Police officers working the front desk at the Public Safety Facility said they saw a suspect remove palm leaves from landscaping and then throw them into a fountain. When the officers contacted the suspect, they saw plant debris at the top and bottom of the pond. Officers placed the suspect under arrest for vandalism. He was identified as Paul Oliver, 34, a transient. His bail was set at $500.
Saturday, May 23, at 8:33 p.m.,
Officers on routine patrol near the 1500 block of the beach were flagged down by a passerby who said they saw a woman with two small children walking along the beach who appeared to be intoxicated. Officers went out onto the beach and saw a woman approximately 50 feet from the water, who was allegedly staggering in the sand as she walked. There were two small children, ages 2 and 3, next to her. The children’s clothing and diapers were wet from the ocean water. The female, who officers determined was the mother of the younger child and guardian of the older, was extremely intoxicated. Officers placed the suspect under arrest for child endangerment. She was identified as Jeriel Earls, 24, of Los Angeles. Her bail was set at $100,000.
Saturday, May 23, at 9:52 p.m.,
Officers were driving in the area of Yorkshire and Kansas avenues when they observed a vehicle being driven with no headlights and at a high rate of speed. The driver failed to stop after officers turned on their emergency lights and siren and instead went onto the I-10 Freeway, police said. The vehicle, a Lexus, eventually stopped on the I-405 Freeway at Slauson Avenue. Officers searched the car and discovered the passenger was in possession of methamphetamine. The driver of the vehicle, identified as Kevin Morales, 21, of Santa Monica, was placed under arrest for felony evading, a parole violation and a criminal street gang enhancement. He was not eligible for bail. The passenger, Christopher Sanchez, 19, of Santa Monica, was booked for possession of methamphetamine with the intent to distribute, a probation violation and a criminal street gang enhancement. He was also not eligible for bail.
Saturday, May 23, at 2:20 p.m.,
Officers responded to the 300 block of Arizona Avenue regarding a domestic violence call. When officers arrived, they made contact with the alleged victim who said that a boyfriend had her phone and refused to give it back. When she tried to get the phone back, the boyfriend allegedly grabbed her by the arm and then by the hair and pulled her into a department store. The boyfriend fled the store once police were called. Officers located the suspect a short distance away and he was placed under arrest for kidnapping and domestic violence. He was identified as Fernando Avalos, 18, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $100,000.
Friday, May 22, at 6:45 p.m.,
Officers responded to the area of Lincoln and Olympic boulevards regarding a man blocking individuals from walking on the sidewalk. When officers arrived, they observed the suspect stumble into the traffic lanes and approach vehicles stopped for a red light. As the suspect approached the vehicles, he allegedly began yelling at the drivers and requested money. When the officers contacted the suspect he was extremely intoxicated, police said. The suspect was placed under arrest for being drunk in public. He was identified as Jeremy Provence, 37, a transient. His bail was set at $250.
Tuesday, May 19, at 6:19 p.m.,
Officers responded to the 1500 block of Broadway — The Co-Opportunity Market — regarding a shoplifting suspect in custody. When officers arrived, they made contact with grocery store employees who told them that they observed the suspect place groceries into his backpack and then leave the store without paying. Employees confronted the suspect once outside the store and searched the backpack, where they found several items from the store valued at $110.88. Officers determined the suspect entered the store with the intent to steal. The suspect was placed under arrest for burglary and violation of probation. He was identified as Brent Wilson, 56, of Los Angeles. He was not eligible for bail.
