PUBLIC SAFETY FACILITY — A Los Angeles man was apprehended Sunday for allegedly scaring passers-by on the Santa Monica Pier and resisting arrest at Bubba Gump restaurant.
At approximately 10:03 p.m. on Sunday, officers responded to the Santa Monica Pier Substation regarding a report of a man making disturbances and yelling gibberish.
The subject, a 35-year-old African-American, had allegedly been going in and out of the substation up until its closing time at 10 p.m. When he returned to find the doors locked, police said the man picked up a metal newspaper rack and hurled it at the station's glass doors.
Though the doors didn't shatter, officials said the metal rack broke.
Officers then approached the suspect, who at this point was allegedly jumping from side to side and screaming incoherently at strangers.
Police said the suspect was sweating profusely and breathing heavily, as he made a beeline for Bubba Gump.
Because of the subject's aberrant behavior, officers said they shot an X26 Taser to prevent the man from entering the restaurant. The Taser, however, had no effect and the suspect's rampage continued.
Once inside Bubba Gump, the suspect allegedly jumped behind the bar and started to knock bottles of booze off the shelves.
Attempting to detain the man, police said they struggled to cuff him, and when they finally did he broke free.
Another struggle ensued, which tipped officials off to call the paramedics. In his agitated state, police said they believe the man was under the influence of a controlled substance.
The paramedics transported the man to a local hospital, where he is currently being treated and held in custody, police said.
Once the suspect is cleared by doctors, he will be transported to jail, where he will be preliminarily booked for resisting officers, violating post release community supervision, vandalism and being under the influence of a controlled substance.
