On Tuesday, June 11 Melodie Grubbs and The Bay Foundation will discuss ongoing restoration efforts, current vegetation patterns, and future plans for The Los Angeles/El Segundo Dunes (LAX Dunes) at First United Methodist Church, 1008 11th St.
The LAX Dunes, which lie between the west end of the Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) and the Pacific Ocean, are the largest remaining representation of coastal dune community within Southern California. The 302-acre Dune site is owned and managed by Los Angeles World Airports. The site provides habitat for more than 900 species, some of which cannot be found anywhere else on Earth. It is home to the beautiful and delicate federally endangered El Segundo Blue Butterfly, and other rare plant, animal, and insect species. For the past three years, The Bay Foundation has been a key partner in restoration efforts to manage non-native vegetation and increase native vegetation cover.
California Native Plant Society, Los Angeles/Santa Monica Mountains Chapter Programs are free to the public. Refreshments will be served.
