The first person to be interviewed said he had been attacked by the other two after an exchange of words. The same man told officers that he was a third-degree black belt and had used his "Katana sticks" to defend himself after he was punched in the face. Based on the lack of consistent statements from all three suspects, the officers were unable to determine who was the aggressor and placed all three under arrest for assault and battery. The suspects were identified as Orlando Montes Ruiz, 46, of Santa Monica; Andrew Devries, 27, of Santa Monica; and Jeffrey Scott Skyes, 29, of Santa Monica.
