For the May 5 gathering, The Committee for Racial Justice will have the privilege of hosting historian and award- winning author, Dr. Kelly Lytle Hernandez. One of the nation’s foremost experts on race, immigration, and mass incarceration, she will share her insights into both the history and the present status of incarceration in Los Angeles County.
Dr. Lytle Hernandez is Professor of History and African American Studies at UCLA. She also heads a university- sponsored and community- based research project called Million Dollar Hoods, which investigates and reports regularly on both the financial and human costs of L.A.’s addiction to mass incarceration. The human costs, as the reports show, fall with drastic disproportion upon disadvantaged neighborhoods that can least afford to bear the damage that mass incarceration imposes. The Million Dollar Hoods team won a 2018 Freedom Now! Award from the Los Angeles Community Action Network.
As an author, Dr. Lytle Hernandez has won numerous awards for the two books she has published so far: Migra: A History of the U.S. Border Patrol, and City of Inmates: Conquest, Rebellion, and the Rise of Human Caging in Los Angeles.
