The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (Public Health) was recognized as the Local Health Department of the Year Award by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO). This year’s theme of “Improving Public and Private Partnerships” honors Public Health’s work with diverse partners to eliminate the social and structural injustices that result in health inequities. Public Health, in collaboration with the Departments of Health Services and Mental Health, labor partners, community-based organizations, and community members, launched the Center for Health Equity in 2017 to guarantee that all people have the resources and opportunities needed for optimal health and well-being. The Center’s actions include ensuring all infants have an equal chance of survival, no babies are born with congenital syphilis, and a fair distribution of environmental benefits and burdens.
“This award belongs to all our partners who have come together to create and sustain community conditions that allow everyone to reach their full potential,” said Barbara Ferrer, PhD, MPH, MEd, Director of the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health. “Leadership from the Board of Supervisors, alongside collaborations with labor, cities, community organizations, health care providers, other County departments, elected officials, and residents, makes it possible to implement policy, systems and practice changes that build health equity and embrace racial justice.”
“The Department of Public Health works diligently to address health inequities among vulnerable communities throughout Los Angeles County. Public Health is committed to reducing health disparities through collaborations with a wide-range of partners. Under the leadership of Dr. Ferrer, Public Health works closely with diverse community organizations and medical partners to help create and sustain safe, healthy communities throughout LA County,” said Los Angeles County Supervisor Hilda L. Solis. “This award is well deserved.”
NACCHO recognized Los Angeles County Department of Public Health for the award at its 2019 Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida.
