Santa Monica College continues its Distinguished Scientists Lecture Series this spring with a special presentation by Theresa Brown, PhD, RN, on “Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient.” The presentation includes an audience Q&A.
The presentation is free, and will be held online as a live virtual event at 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday, May 3. A Zoom link will be posted with the listing shortly before the event on May 3 on the SMC Events calendar at smc.edu/calendar. To attend, the Zoom software must be installed on the viewer’s computer. Brown, the author of the recently released Healing: When a Nurse Becomes a Patient (Algonquin Books, 2022), is an oncology nurse who will discuss her personal story of being a patient diagnosed and treated for breast cancer. Brown is a frequent contributor to the New York Times, where she writes about nursing and health care. She also wrote the New York Times bestseller The Shift: One Nurse, Twelve Hours, Four Patients’ Lives, which portrays one real shift worked by a hospital nurse. Her Opinion series, “Bedside,” examined health care from a nurse’s point of view. She has also written for CNN.com, The Journal of the American Medical Association, Slate.com, and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.
