Dr. Albert Nicholas, pastor of the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in Los Angeles, will receive the "Community Values Award" from the Santa Monica Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The bronze award will be presented to Dr. Nicholas during a program and reception Thursday, Jan. 29 at 7 p.m. at the Santa Monica Stake Center, 3400 Sawtelle Blvd., Los Angeles. Light refreshments will be served. Dr. Nicholas is the second recipient of the award. In 2013, Los Angeles City Councilman Bob Rosenthal received the honor.
Levi Heath, president of the Santa Monica Stake, said Dr. Nicholas has been at the forefront of many collaborative initiatives involving a tutoring program for Los Angeles youth, health and fitness fairs and expositions, as well as interfaith service projects. "Dr. Nicholas is a giant in our city and like a good shepherd has always been focused on lifting others and doing good works wherever he goes," said Heath. "He is beloved by his congregants and fellow ministers alike and teaches us what it means to be a neighbor and friend."
Dr. Nicholas has been a pastor for more than 40 years and currently leads the Pilgrim Missionary Baptist Church in downtown Los Angeles, which has grown to more than 3,000 members.
The Santa Monica Stake of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints covers a region from Pacific Palisades along the coast to Marina del Rey and as far inland as Topanga State Park, Brentwood and West Los Angeles. Eight wards, or congregations, comprise the Stake. Ecclesiastically, Levi Heath presides over the Stake as Stake President along with his two Stake Counselors as well as other church leaders.
