Trader Joe’s has filed preliminary paperwork for a third Santa Monica location.
The grocery store has asked for a tenant improvement permit at 500 Broadway in the under construction development that sits across from the newly constructed Target.
A company spokeswoman said they are interested in expanding their presence in Santa Monica but said no leases have been signed and their efforts are in the very early stages.
“Trader Joe’s is very much interested in bringing another store to the Santa Monica area and are taking the steps to make it happen but nothing is confirmed at this point,” said Kenya Friend-Daniel, National Director of Public Relations for Trader Joe’s.
A construction permit for the 500 Broadway project lists Trader Joe’s as possible tenant for the site but does not provide any details of the proposed store, other than it’s location in “Suite 10.”
The overall development, known as The Park, includes 249 apartments. Developers have previously said the seven-story project at Fred Segal’s former Downtown Santa Monica location will also contain 55,000 square feet of retail space and a four-level, 500-car underground parking structure.
If Trader Joe’s does occupy a space at the location it would be the second major retailer on the block as Target recently completed construction of a small-format store on the other side of the street.
The Downtown location would be the third for the company following their original location on Pico Blvd. and a second location on the 2300 block of Wilshire.
Santa Monica currently has 13 grocery stores within city limits. That figure will increase to 14 when the new small-format target opens Downtown.
