Committee For Racial Justice will commemorate Black History Month 2019 with words and music. Drummers and African Dancers will open the program.
CRJ’s February 10th gathering will feature guest speaker, Miranda Sheffield, a social justice activist and scholar. She will discuss the history of enslaved Africans who escaped capture and the tactics they deployed to resist being caught. Miranda will discuss how their actions can aide today in people's struggle for justice and freedom.
Sheffield carries a dedicated background in social justice advocacy and resistance. For the last 10 years her primary form of work has been dedicated to working with black and brown youth who have experienced foster care and, in addition, providing reproductive health+STI training at the Edelman Children's court. She also assists pregnant and expectant foster youth to access informed health care information.
In 2014, Miranda begin to organize with the Black Lives Matter Los Angeles chapter around the police murder of Ezell Ford. This led to BLM occupying the front of the LAPD office.
In the last year Miranda has spent her time living in London attending SOAS University of London to pursue a master's degree in Human Rights Law. Her research focuses on law, race and colonialism, exploring the rich history of resistance by Maroons and fugitive slaves throughout the African diaspora.
