Lions’ helping others

This month we are highlighting three additional community organizations that receive funding from the proceeds of the Santa Monica Lions Annual Pancake Breakfast. This will be our 65th breakfast and we hope you will join us on Saturday, September 28th at the SM Boys and & Girls Club for a delicious breakfast, family activities and raffle, all to support local charities in our neighborhood.
The Westside Family Health Center started in 1974, thanks to a small group of dedicated feminists and mid-level clinicians who started the Women's Health Care Project to empower women’s health and provide women’s health care. As it evolved, they added prenatal care in 1990, pediatric services in 1992, adolescent health care in 1994 and a family practice program 1999. WFHC provides comprehensive, high quality, cost effective health care and empowers patients to become their own advocates. Due to growing healthcare needs, WFHC will be moving in early 2020, to 3861 Sepulveda Boulevard in Culver City, the former LA WEEKLY building. This new site will be triple the size of their current location.
The Santa Monica History Museum’s roots can be traced back to the “Historical Activities Committee” of Santa Monica’s Centennial Celebration in 1975. Created to collect and preserve the history, art, and culture of the Santa Monica Bay Area, it became the Santa Monica Historical Society. However, in 1988, after the determination, perseverance, and countless hours of work by Louise and Bob Gabriel, the Historical Society became the Santa Monica History Museum. The Museum’s collection has more than one million items, including more than 600,000 rare photographs, one of the largest historical photography collections in Southern California. There are six galleries, a research library, children/community education program and they sponsor projects throughout the area to save and protect Santa Monica Bay Area history for future generations.
The Santa Monica Boys & Girls Club has been here since 1944, offering a supportive, non-competitive environment to help kids graduate from high school with a plan for the future; demonstrating good character and citizenship, and living a healthy lifestyle. With more than 4,000 youth members, ages 6 – 18, at the five branch locations, 100% of SM Club Members graduated from high school this year, compared to only 77% of LAUSD high school students. Locations include Lincoln Blvd, St. Anne’s School, John Adams Middle School, Olympic High School and Mar Vista Gardens. The Santa Monica location is the host of our 65th Annual Pancake Breakfast!
