Many Thanks
Many thanks to everyone who came to the Santa Monica Lions Club pancake breakfast to eat pancakes, catch-up with friends, watch the Cabeza de Vaca Cultural Dancers and participate in the raffle. Your generosity is greatly appreciated and will be used to support many organizations that serve in the Santa Monica Community. We would like to also give special acknowledgement to Casa Escobar, Gilbert’s El Indio, Fromin’s, Carlthrop School, OP Café, Bob’s Market and Pacific Youth Foundation. Each of them helped to make our event successful.

November is National Diabetes Awareness month. As Lions we are working to increase everyone’s awareness of this deadly disease. In the past 20 years, the number of US adults diagnosed with diabetes has more than tripled. More than 30 million people in the US have diabetes with 25% of them not aware they have it. An additional 84 million US adults—over a third—have prediabetes, and 90% of them don’t know they have it.
Diabetes puts you at risk for kidney failure, heart disease, stroke and blindness, so the earlier it is diagnosed the better chance you have of controlling it. Early symptoms can include increased thirst and urination, increased hunger, fatigue, weight loss, blurred vision and slow healing wounds. If you experience any combination of these symptoms, please make an appointment for a diabetes screening.
One of the many programs the Santa Monica Lions support is the Santa Monica YMCA’s diabetes prevention program, Redefine Your Health - Transform Your Life. The year-long program helps those at high risk of developing type-2 diabetes adopt and maintain healthy lifestyles by eating healthier, increasing physical activity and losing a modest amount of weight to reduce their chances of developing the disease. More information can be found at www.ymcasm.org.
