As one who has lived on the corner of 17th Street and Ashland Avenue for the past decade and a half, I empathize with the parents who fear for their children's safety when they see those kids navigating a dangerous intersection ("Parents fear for children crossing street near New Roads," Sept. 18).
There are only two stop signs, which are on Ashland. They do nothing to protect us from vehicles zooming up the 17th Street hill directly to the south of our home, a hill so steep that neither pedestrians nor drivers can see those vehicles until they are inches away. We have had both near-misses and real collisions at our corner, but still the city does not see the necessity of two more stop signs.
All I can say is keep trying to reason with the city, New Roads parents, and pray that the city will listen to you before something awful happens.
