A pet groomer that turns discarded dog fur into clothing and a huge chain hotel that rewards guests who drive hybrid cars are among the winners of this year’s Sustainable Quality Awards.
Established in 1995, the awards honor businesses in Santa Monica that have made strides in sustainable economic development, social responsibility and preservation of the environment.
In total, two businesses were named Grand Prize winners and four won in the Excellence category. These companies will be honored at the Santa Monica Chamber of Commerce 2012 Sustainable Quality Awards Luncheon May 2.
The Fairmont Miramar Hotel and Bungalows was one of the Grand Prize winners, earning their distinction by adhering to a Green Partnership program committed to sustainable tourism and enforcing energy efficiency.
Healthy Spot pet retailer was also named a Grand Prize winner for its sale of eco-friendly products, biodegradable doggie bags and contributions to local charities.
In the Excellence category, Bridgid Coulter Design, a residential and commercial interior design firm, repurposes materials from demolitions for reuse in new projects.
FIG restaurant was also honored with the distinction of Excellence for its reliance on locally grown foods and participation in the Santa Monica Food Waste composting program.
Loews Santa Monica Beach Hotel was also included in the Excellence category for their energy and water efficiency, among other sustainable operation practices spearheaded by their Green Team.
In a step away from the traditional businesses on the list, the Media Policy Center, a foundation that promotes productions and localized outreach, also achieved the rank of Excellence. All of the foundation’s affiliated documentaries and TV series promote environmental change and sustainability.
