Sunday, Jan. 1, at 12:04 a.m.,
Santa Monica police officers responded to the 200 block of Broadway — Copa de Oro — regarding a large fight taking place outside the bar. When officers arrived, they found a man on the ground and bleeding from a head wound. Witnesses directed officers to the suspect, who was detained on the 1400 block of Ocean Avenue. During their investigation, officers learned that the suspect and the alleged victim had been involved in an argument inside the bar and were ejected by management. The argument continued outside, at which time the suspect hit the victim several times in the face and head and then fled, police said. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment. The suspect was placed under arrest for assault with a deadly weapon and a parole violation. He was identified as Adrian Hubbard, 24, of Camarillo, Calif. No bail was set.
Monday, Jan. 2, at 2:30 p.m.,
Officers were on routine patrol on the 600 block of Santa Monica Boulevard when they saw a man smoking on the grounds of the Main Library, a violation of the Municipal Code. Officers made contact with the man, at which time he allegedly told them that he did not any have identification on him and that he was on parole for a weapons violation. Officers asked the man if he had anything illegal on him, and he told them that he had a glass pipe used to smoke methamphetamine. Officers searched the suspect and recovered the pipe in his jacket pocket. Police placed the suspect under arrest for possession of drug paraphernalia and for smoking on library property. He was identified as Mark Anthony Shakar, 39, transient. His bail was set at $500.
Monday, Jan. 2, at 7:48 p.m.,
Officers responded to the 300 block of Colorado Avenue — Bloomingdale’s — regarding a report of a suspected shoplifter being chased by store security northbound on Fourth Street. Officers arrived in the area and located the suspect on the 1400 block of Fourth Street and detained him without incident. During their investigation, officers learned that the suspect selected two coats from the store and was observed using a tool to remove the security sensors. When he failed to remove one of the sensors, he allegedly dropped a black coat and walked out of the store with another one hidden inside a shopping bag. He did not offer any payment for the coat, police said. He was placed under arrest for petty theft and was identified as Levell Harris, 21, a transient. His bail was set at $1,000.
Saturday, Dec. 31, at 7:35 p.m.,
Officers were on routine patrol in the area of 21st Street and Delaware Avenue when they saw a Honda Accord parked in a red zone. Officers made contact with the driver regarding the violation. During their conversation, officers said they recognized one of the passengers from a prior arrest and knew he was on probation for narcotics-related offenses. Officers conducted a search of the suspect and recovered methamphetamine and a hypodermic needle, police said. Additional paraphernalia was found underneath the seat where the suspect was sitting. The driver consented to a search, at which time he was found to be in possession of both methamphetamine and Xanax, police said. A glass smoking pipe was also located inside the car. Both were placed under arrest and booked for possession of a controlled substance. They were identified as Naeem Yazid Clark, 27, of Los Angeles, and Jeremiah Locke, 31, of Los Angeles. Clark was also booked for possession of a controlled substance without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia. His bail was set at $10,000. Locke was also booked for possession of marijuana, a hypodermic needle and violation of probation. No bail was set.
Friday, Dec. 30, at 4:40 p.m.,
Officers responded to the 300 block of Colorado Avenue — Sears — regarding a suspected shoplifter. When officers arrived, they detained the suspect as he exited the store. During a search, officers said they recovered several items belonging to Sears. Officers spoke with security, who said they followed the suspect and watched as he used box cutters to open packaging before taking the merchandise. He then exited the store without paying. The suspect was arrested for petty theft. He was identified as Jose Hernandez Garcia, 29, of Los Angeles. His bail was set at $1,000.
Thursday, Dec. 29, at 9:19 p.m.,
Officers responded to the 2900 block of Main Street — Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf — regarding a report of an assault that had just occurred. When officers arrived, they made contact with a minor and their parent, who said that the suspect walked into the coffee shop and threw a quarter at the minor, striking them in the hand. The suspect then allegedly spit on the minor and threw a chair in the dining area before leaving on foot. Officers located the suspect nearby. He initially refused to cooperate with officers and had to be taken to the ground and handcuffed. The suspect was positively identified by the victim and transported to jail, where he was booked for battery and obstructing. He was identified as Hiyabu Gebremedh Hiyabu, 54, a transient. His bail was set at $20,000.
